UN hails rare climate success story as emissions from construction stop rising

The annual review from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), published on Monday, showed global emissions from construction in 2024 remained at the same rate as in 2023, despite continued urbanisation...

The UN report sets out targets for governments to accelerate this action. It calls on major carbon-emitting nations to adopt mandatory zero-carbon building codes by 2028, with all other countries following no later than 2035. These energy codes would require new buildings to produce zero net emissions, cutting future greenhouse gas output.

Not great news for Starmer's target of 1.5 millions homes built in England over this Parliament. It looks even more shaky than it did when first proclaimed, or has the original proclamation been lost yet?

As this ludicrous target becomes more and more entangled in the sticky webs of reality, maybe we'll be treated to a three-cornered responsibility scrap between Angela, Ed and Keir.

Let us hope so, may as well eke some entertainment out of what seems like the inexorable nature of our decline.

Mandatory zero carbon building codes, eh?

I don't know the Physics behind it, but I'm sure there's a reason why small motors (like in toys, fans, and milk floats) are often powered by batteries, whereas big ones like lorries, diggers, and bulldozers tend to need diesel. More money needs to be spent by Ed on developing massive batteries, and Rachel will need to be involved as well. You can't wait around for private enterprise to catch on.

Sam - it's odd how private enterprise has to be paid to catch on and paid again to carry on with it. Almost as if Ed and Rachel have made a mistake in their calculations and projections.

I'm rubbish at maths, but building 1.5 million homes in a 5 year Parliament appears to require more than 800 houses being built each and every day, including bank holidays. I can only assume that the ginger growler had Diane Abbott help her with the calculations.
By the way, has Lammy ever clarified which side of slavery his Bantu* ancestors experienced, and how many heat pumps has Milliband installed in his three kitchens, before being whisked away in his EV?
*After the Zulus, the Bantu tribes were said to be the largest group of slavers in Africa.

Penseivat - yes it's over 800 per day. People with the right experience say it isn't going to happen, not even close. As for Lammy, he hasn't clarified anything about the now banned commercial activities of his ancestors, can't think why.
