Trump needs EU support to end the war in Ukraine, says Ursula von der Leyen
Donald Trump needs the support of the EU to end the war in Ukraine, Ursula von der Leyen has insisted.
The European Commission President made the declaration on Thursday as she announced that European leaders had agreed to relax fiscal rules for member states to spend more on their defence following pressure from Mr Trump.
Of course one of the main planks of EU propaganda is that it has prevented war in Europe, so the prospect of being left on the side-lines of a Ukraine deal must stick in the collective craw. Being side-lined by Trump makes it worse.
So bad is the situation, that the EU even seems to be considering the possibility of coming up with ideas, possibly even some conferences about the pressing need to have some ideas. It really has reached that level of stodgy agitation.

Rendered irrelevant in fact ... best just wind up the EU now, render it past history.
“…agreed to relax fiscal rules…”
So basically, they’re going to debauch their currency in order to continue a war that can’t be won.
What could possibly go wrong?
The EU is totally useless these days. We should leave
Anon - I agree, the EU has been given a long-term test, didn't pass the test, time to abandon it.
Peter - almost as if Zimbabwe never happened.
Bucko - I agree, it's time for a way out - we could call it 'Brexit'.
One consolation: at least we can expect to hear fewer idiots using the absurd expression "Leader of the Free World." I do hope that we shall also hear fewer of our own chumps chattering inanely about "the Special Relationship."
That puts Trump into quite a dilemma. Should he completely ignore her, or should he ask her to spell out exactly what support he needs?
Alternatively Trump (and the USA) could just walk away. What is the EU going to do then?
dearieme - as an EU fan, Starmer chattering about "the Special Relationship" doesn't come across well, and in the background is the thought that we don't want to know about his special relationships.
Sam - he could ask her to spell it out, but he'd need to put a time limit in there because it could take many months to formulate and even then would be subject to endless revision.
DJ - even the EU might not care to speculate on that, it wouldn't be good.
Nah! It would never catch on.
Of course Trump needs the backing of Ursula Van der Layen! She can supply all the wooden tanks, missiles and guns that are needed to be a central plank in the negotiations!
Tammly - isn't Ursula the central plank?
