Chancellor dealt major blow as business confidence sinks: Bad news for Reeves ahead of Spring Statement

Rachel Reeves was dealt a further blow last night as figures showed business optimism had plummeted to its lowest level in four years...

The figure tumbled to 91.4 – the lowest since January 2021 – from 92.2 in December. A reading of 100 is average, while a gauge below 95 is negative.

The lowest since January 2021 eh? So Rachel from Accounts has managed to reduce business confidence to a pandemic level.

Blimey.

A stupid woman, now, would insist on going over the whole thing again, like a blue-bottle that starts in banging about the room after you're sure you've driven it out of the window.

At least in the pandemic the manufacturers of PPE, handwash, and laminated signs telling you to go away were all pretty confident.

Still, they were profiteering Tory scum, so well done Rachel for a nice bit of levelling down.

Sam - Keir and the Starmerettes create an impression that they don't care about such things as business confidence, as if they see confidence as a matter of knowing your ideology.

Yes well, I have no doubt she can make things worse in her upcoming spring budget statement. Lets quess: 1, She will try and dampen the farmers' protest by adding some bodges. She is too arrogant to admit a mistake so the bodges will of course have equally destructive unintended consequences and complications. 2 She will try and lessen the effect of her NI changes with equivalent bodged 'incentives', again with worse consequences. 3, They will have a crackdown on smuggling because her tobacco tax rises have caused a significant drop in tax receipts. 4, Milliband will be slapped on the wrist with lots of promises of how net zero can work if only the government shout loudly enough about a few useless enforced on him tweaks to his plans.

Woodsy - yes she will have lots of problems with her inability to back off from the mistakes already made and bodge, bodge, bodge seems more likely than anything constructive.

At least no one suggests she's playing 5-D chess.
