The irony meter is unfixable

Labour benefit cuts may breach equality law, says human rights watchdog

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has said it is considering whether the plans set out by Liz Kendall to cut disability benefits comply with the Equality Act.

A spokesman for the EHRC said: “The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) must consider the equality impact of the proposed benefit reforms on disabled people.

“The public sector equality duty (PSED) requires government departments to have due regard for how their policies and decisions affect people with protected characteristics.”

"No, honestly, Keir, it all seemed like a good idea at the time, and I distinctly remember Tony telling me that you yourself were in favour of the Equality Act. In fact, you made a decent living out of it as I remember. You definitely can't repeal any of it, as the Muslims won't let you, and imagine what Eddie Izzard would say to his mates. So those savings are going to have to come from elsewhere. Look, I've got a paper here on cutting Net Zero, and another one on your Ukraine thingie. And for goodness sake stop crying, splash your face with cold water, and get a grip. You've got that press conference in five minutes..."

A modern problem is that the irony meter is now digital. Unfortunately due to budget cuts the design team only catered for two digits in the read out. So when Two Tier sees an irony reading of '42' he can persuade himself that all is still on track, if slightly wobbly. But the true reading is '142'.

What we have to look out for is that Two Tier may be stampeded into punishing everybody equally, rather than just the grannies, the farmers, and the workshy.

touché Sam V. And then there is Chagos. And the support for all the pseudo Charities. And millions spent on Independent, Public, Full, Judicial, (add your own adjective) Inquiries, where eny fule do know what the outcome will be - eg The Covid Inquiry Grand Tour of UK where a summary in the multi pound, both monetary and avoirdupois, report will be "Boris was a very naughty boy" together with others now dead, retired on nice pension or otherwise immune.

Presumably, under Labour's interpretation of the Equality Act, only the small boat invaders and Mo's mates will still qualify. If you're a white Welsh Baptist, die you bastard, die.

Sam - "you yourself were in favour of the Equality Act. In fact, you made a decent living out of it as I remember"

Unfortunately nothing else really matters, lawyers, bureaucrats, NGOs and charities are always comfortable with more work for lawyers, bureaucrats, NGOs and charities.

Tammly - I think we're there already.

decnine - pronoun alert!!

DJ - of course, I wondered why the reading was as low as 42. It may be a hangover from Y2K, one which was never fixed.

Doonhamer - and there is no point pushing for an inquiry into inquiries, because that just feeds the Blob.

Penseivat - and an old white Welsh Baptist is even less desirable, may as well identify as an unperson now.

So if you have to pay people to stay at home because of a minor made up illness, because of equality, surely they have to pay me to do the same, because equal?

Bucko - ah but do you have a protected characteristic?

I'm sure I could come up with one
