He spoke like an eye-witness

I never was so impressed as by him. The secret was not in his words. It was his peculiar earnestness. He spoke like an eye-witness, and seemed under unutterable fear himself. He had the preacher’s master-gift of alarming.

Sheridan Le Fanu - Willing to Die (1872)

The problem in going along with the climate narrative is a simple one – anyone doing so is aligning themselves with problematic people. Racketeers, charlatans, fanatics, political totalitarians and useful idiots – take your pick.

He spoke like an eye-witness

They do, don’t they? The BBC does it, David Attenborough does it, Ed Miliband does it. As if they have seen the scorching flames of an extra degree on the global thermometer, maybe even two if we are very bad.

I'm an eye-witness to sea levels on my childhood summer holidays in the 1960s being the same as they are now. And there are dozens of "then and now" photographs of different places showing that sea levels are as near to unchanged as makes no difference. But often these photos are debunked or "fact checked", and a journalist with a master's degree in climatopinionology will explain why the truth is a good deal more complicated than mere eye-witnesses can handle.

The same with ambient temperature. I would have said, if I didn't know better, that this has been a miserably cool and wet spring and summer. Other people that I meet out walking often agree with me, but that just goes to show that a lie can be halfway around the world before the truth has got its thermal fleece on.

Sam - I'm an eye-witness to how pleasant warm days are and how often we don't get them in spite of those journalist with a master's degree in climatopinionology telling us how we'll be scorched by such weather on January 1st 2031 if we don't do as Ed Miliband says by 2030.
