Huge Impact

Met Office issues verdict as Hurricane Ernesto to have huge impact on UK weather

The Met Office has warned that Hurricane Ernesto could bring "unsettled" weather to the UK.

In its long-range forecast, forecasters predict that the start of next week will bring with it cloud and rain in parts of the country before clearing up later in the week.

The Met Office's forecast for the period between Monday, August 19 until Wednesday, August 28, reads: "An unsettled start to the week with cloud and rain in many areas.

Which gives us a nice example of journalistic language where -

huge impact = unsettled weather

Not quite in the catastrophic climate change league where the BBC, Sky and other premium players still reign supreme,  but coming on. Here's how it should be done -

How climate change is driving extreme fires in Greece

Sceptics about the impact of climate change point out that the amount of land area burned by fires globally is falling. But there are other, more sinister trends that climate scientists are worried about.

Them Climate Scientist are worried that they, the shepherds of the environment are not being believed any more. And also the extreme scary wolf might not even exist. But mainly "funds" unlike snow might be a thing of the past.

Greece has always been piping in August. Half a century ago I used to go there at that time to chase Swedish skirt and drink cheap Amstel and Metaxa brandy until I fell into a coma. Happy Hot Days.

Are they worried about the 'climate activists' who are starting fires deliberately and claiming them for climate change?

If you are an anxious sort the weather is a fine thing to worry about. It cannot be adequately predicted or controlled and rain falls on the righteous as well as the far right (sarcasm).

But you can make a career wringing your hands about it. I'm beginning to wonder why no-one keeps a public record of all these predictions and their outcomes - perhaps because it would show up all the chancers.

Mrs Discovered Joys jokes that there is often one reliable weather forecast available but you never know which one until later...

Doonhamer - yes, if funds do become a thing of the past then so will climate doom. A minor temperature rise and some extra CO2 may even become a Good Thing.

Nobby - and we've always seen stories about fires in Greece because August is a quiet time for political news - or it was.

Tammly - they should be concerned because it only takes one nutter.

DJ - we generally compare two weather forecasts if we are going out, but it's surprising how inaccurate both can be. It's only a perception, but I don't see any improvement over recent decades.

I can't remember a time when we didn't have 'unsettled weather' in England (And my friends in Greece feel the same about fires in summer)

Bucko - yes it's just how it is and we're used to it. A warm sunny day today doesn't mean tomorrow will be the same, could be cool and wet. A warm sunny morning doesn't even mean the afternoon will be warm and sunny.
