The driver of the bus self-extricated

Derby bus fire saw crews tackle huge blaze near Derbion shopping centre

The fire in Morledge sent thick, black smoke across the city today

A spokeswoman for the fire service said: "Road closures and diversions are in place at Morledge.

"Fire crews were called to the incident at 11.33am. The driver of the bus self-extricated prior to the arrival of the fire service. There were no passengers onboard the bus at the time of the incident."

That's what I'd do, I'd be self-extricating like blazes.

I suppose that "self evacuated" might be misconstrued.
Even if appropriate.

I bet he regretted infiltrating the bus in the first place.

Self exodus? Nah.

Doonhamer - I wish she'd said "self evacuated" but sadly it's probably not the official term.

Sam - ha ha, I bet he did.

James - it's popular in Canada.

I see nobody is saying whether it was an electric bus or not - so presumably it was.

No mention whether it's yet another electric time bomb, unfortunately.

I'm sure "Driver" could be replaced with an alternative term, although I'm struggling to think of one which the fire service would approve of...

The video in your link doesn't play for me, but "Witnesses say they heard a 'pop that was like an explosion'" has all the hallmarks of an EV battery going into thermal runaway...

Peter and Jannie - one comment says it was a 2008 diesel. I haven't seen any electric buses locally, but I don't know about Derby city.

Dave - it sounds as if the fire service would go for an alternative to "Driver", although whatever they chose could be confusing for everyone who doesn't work in an office. One comment says it was a 2008 diesel, quite old.

I wonder whether "self-extricate" is favoured by people who don't know whether to write 'bailed out' or 'baled out'?

dearieme - blimey we could have ended up with "self-baled".
