Everything that Starmer proposes seems designed to increase bureaucracy. Reform are the only party that are actively campaigning to reduce bureaucracy. That might go some way to explaining the types of people who favour the different parties.

But our political parties seem hooked on bureaucracy to a greater or lesser extent. Bureaucracy is addictive - the more you have the more you want. How did the 'Bonfire of the QUANGOs' go? Quite. Which manifestoes promise more 'Commissions'? Quite.
It would need bravery and discipline to reduce our bureaucracy.
Sam - bureaucracy seems to represent security to many voters, as if they don't see institutions as a threat to anything they value. It's superficial, but we seem to be stuck with voters who don't wish to look beyond what they think is familiar and safe.
DJ - most MPs seem to become bureaucrats fairly quickly once they have entered the HoC. They sniff out where the power is and align themselves with it. There doesn't seem to be much we can hope for in that respect unless polls are significantly overestimating the Labour vote.
