Artist who covered a car with a doily up for Turner Prize
The shortlist for 2024’s Turner Prize has been announced and includes Scottish artist Jasleen Kaur who covered a red sports car with an ornamental doily mat.
Manilla-born Pio Abad, Manchester-born Claudette Johnson, Glasgow-born Kaur and Worthing-born Delaine Le Bas have been nominated in the prize’s 40th anniversary as the prestigious art event returns to London’s Tate Britain for the first time in six years.
The artists are competing for £25,000, while those shortlisted will be awarded £10,000.
It's an extremely large doily, so maybe that makes a statement.
It's still mildly surprising that anyone enters this competition. Being artistically naïve I'd expect other artists to snigger at the winner to such an extent that it would be a significant career setback. Something to miss off the CV perhaps, but apparently not.
Must be the moolah.

Maybe it's a competition to give people with no artistic talent and no hope whatsoever of a career in art, to win 25k for doing bugger all, before embarking on a career as a pink haired activist
Prizes awarded by luvvies to other luvvies? I am indifferent. Couldn't be bothered enough to be upset.
Bucko - or they may intend to do both and become pink haired activist artists. That way they have two possibilities of being featured in the Guardian or on the BBC.
DJ - the oddity of it is that the prize has been ridiculed for years. Maybe this is a strong point in luvvie circles.
Does every car not deserve its own doily? Is this doilyism we’re detecting, AKH?
James - only electric cars, I don't think they are suited to the real thing.
An 'omaj ( I can do poseur, too ) to Gilbert and Sullivan via Doily Cart.
To be viewed while listening to "I've got a little list." Suitably adapted to include certain artistes. You know the ones.
Doonhamer - heck of a list though.
It's conceptual art innit? What the concepts involved are, is anyone's guess. Except the concept of creating an arresting image. One trick ponies is a phrase that springs to mind.
Tammly - easy to understand why it's done though, conceptual art can make the whole business so much easier.
