Strangely Busy

It was strangely busy in town this morning. The huge Co-op car park was almost full, there were lots of people milling around and delivery vans all over the place.

Mrs H and I wondered if people were stocking up because they plan to stay in tomorrow and watch the coronation circus on TV. Casually patriotic boozing with friends perhaps. Yet there aren’t anywhere near as many flags around as we’ve seen during a World Cup run.

The media try to wind us up of course, but I thought there would be widespread indifference. Charles has been a royal fixture forever and is hardly an interesting character.

So much for my assessment of the national psyche I suppose. No doubt we’ll discover the general level of interest tomorrow.

Waitrose was busy at lunch time. In Grantchester someone had decorated her wall with lots of large Union Jacks.

(If some pompous ass tells me that they are Union Flags I'll scream.)

Our village started some celebrations yesterday, but I didn't notice the souvenir programme until just now, as we have an anti-dog basket on the post box, and the publication was the same colour as the door...

Got some work to do outside today, so will have to dip in and out if I can!

Gauging the level of interest will be an interesting job. There will be big crowds, I guess, but here in the south this morning it is pouring with rain, so people will attribute any apparent lack of interest to that. And a lot of it will be "summing up the national mood". I think it will be solemnly patriotic, but also we will be teetering on the edge of republican status. It depends who is trying to convince us, and what they think will get most clicks.

My personal view is that a rather soppy impressionable old boy will get something put on his head, and that's better than having President Blair.

dearieme - we've mostly seen strings of plastic flags which look as if they came from China, or Amazon as it's sometimes called.

Scrobs - we have the grandkids with us and so far they seem to be entirely uninterested.

Sam - so far it's quite a pleasant morning here in Derbyshire. Charles should have chosen Derby for his big day. I agree, President Blair is the ultimate argument for monarchy. Even that could wear off, but President Starmer already sounds grim too.

The Mrs has found some Union Jack bunting that was bought and used for Elizabeth's coronation 70 years ago and insisted on hanging it in the lounge!

Woodsy - my cousin's wife remembers going round to a neighbour's house to watch Elizabeth's coronation on their television, a tiny screen in a big wooden case.
