Otherwise we don't run the government, the government runs us

Well, it looks as if that ship has already sailed. But it would be far better if we had that Jeffersonian imperative of scepticism towards government taught to young people. It's different from scientific literacy. Not everyone can ask informed questions about the processes of science, but most people can be encouraged to ask "Why do you believe that? What evidence do you have for it?"

Government responses could then at least be looked at by those who understand the issues. Forcing the government to explain in simple terms why they are doing what they are doing would focus things wonderfully. For example, "Why are you allowing such high levels of immigration? Do you think it's good for the country? If so, why? Or are you just powerless to stop it?"

A charlatan has appeared in our time. His name is Professor Michael Mann of Pen State University.

Sam - "Why do you believe that? What evidence do you have for it?" I agree, a basic grounding in the fundamental sceptical questions could easily be taught in schools and adapted to most subjects, possibly all of them.

Tammly - and he even looks like a charlatan.
