While walking across the road bridge in Matlock today, we saw a huge crane lifting a tracked construction vehicle across the River Derwent. I'm not sure what the fascination is, but we had to stop and take a photo. We weren't the only ones of course.

There’s definitely something fascinating and compelling about a heavyweight engineering project.
I’d like to think that our distant ancestors paused in the same way to watch as monoliths, capstones or totem poles were heaved into place or masonry winched to the top of cathedral towers (if you’re lucky, you can still catch the latter as part of the ongoing renovations at York Minster and get in touch with your inner medieval yokel).
Macheath - I'm sure you are right. Even on old newsreels it was possible to capture a similar sensation when huge ocean-going ships were launched. Or big steam engines hissing and grinding into a station with that irresistible power they seem to exude.
I'm not sure I want to be in touch with my inner medieval yokel though, he thinks we're all hopelessly soft.
Two of them, and you could have a fantastic game of conkers.
Sam - the other conker could be one of the caravans squatting in the nearby car park.
