One move, two games

Boris Johnson sitting on ‘ticking timebomb’ over new Partygate claims, say senior Tories

Boris Johnson is sitting on a “ticking timebomb” over new Partygate claims being examined by police, say senior Tories – warning that the controversy engulfing the former PM could damage the party’s re-election chances.

Conservative grandee Michael Heseltine said Mr Johnson was “painfully on the rack” after Cabinet Office officials referred him to Scotland Yard and Thames Valley Police over further possible lockdown violations at Chequers and No 10.

It should be interesting to see how this latest game plays out.

One obvious possibility is that it is a move to discredit whatever Boris Johnson may tell the Covid public inquiry. No doubt Boris is quite capable of writing a book about his side of the story so the boot goes in early. In which case, the game is presumably being played and supported by officials determined to be exonerated in one way or another.

The involvement of Michael Heseltine suggests an anti-Brexit game is being played at the same time. One move, two games. It's almost impressive.

All we need is John Major to get involved, and The Grauniad will have a field day...

I always thought a Grandee was a small cigar - both me and my dad often bought them when we were a bit flush!

(Advert - 'There's a good day's smoking in five Grandee')!

Impressive or a yawn.

It's pretty obvious that Boris's partiality to a bit of cake at an office party renders 17.4 million votes completely invalid. Surely everyone can see Heseltine's logic there.

Scrobs - ah yes, I vaguely remember Grandee cigars - I never smoked though, in spite of all the advertising.

James - I wouldn't call it a yawn if it really is officials hounding an ex-PM to offload their own failures.

Sam - and those 17.4 million voters are probably gluttonous cake eaters too.

Even out of office Boris Johnson continues to be useful as a lightning rod attracting the bile of others. Watch who attacks him and note the names.

I would deem it to be personal validation if Michael Heseltine criticised me (unlikely as that is because I am just a Rude Mechanical (retired)).

Long ago a friend was out canvassing at an election. An elderly chap on the doorstep launched into a diatribe against Heseltine. "I was at school with his father and he was an awful crook too." Which he then illustrated with an example.

DJ - yes that's a good approach - "Watch who attacks him and note the names." Plus those who fail to point out the games being played.

dearieme - interesting. It's a pity that stories of this type don't become more well known until long after the damage such people do has been done, possibly not even then. Libel laws and the expense of it I suppose.
