Just pay Gary less

BBC's Newsnight to be cut back as part of savings plan

BBC Two's Newsnight is to be cut back and have its format overhauled as part of a plan to save money in the corporation's news department.

The long-running show will lose its dedicated reporters, be shortened by 10 minutes and drop its investigative films to focus on studio-based debates.

The word "less" in the post title can be taken to mean much less...

or to be more honest it means nothing at all.

With the BBC, it's certainly true that "No news is good news". Because that's where the main problem lies. I've heard that their nature programmes are good, although they seem to have become a revered institution on a par with the NHS. Radio 3 still does a decent job. I've heard a couple of good programmes on Radio 4 that got me thinking. No idea about sport. But the political bias is enough for me to condemn the whole organisation. It's like having an acquaintance who is a good musician, takes good snaps of holiday destinations, can occasionally come up with a few good ideas, but who also happens to be a personality-disordered liar.

Sam - a while ago I was reading while a BBC nature programme was on TV and the sound of it was quite interesting. Without the visuals, it came across as little more than presenters promoting themselves. Like any large organisation, the BBC probably has people who could produce good material, but the majority are virtue-signalling mediocrities and the general output reflects that.

The BBC is the communications arm of the Establishment... and currently the Establishment has been 'marched through' and being (perhaps) culturally over-extended has to insist on people sticking to The Narrative. Otherwise people might start objecting to all the Establishment ideas that are for their own good.

So if you must follow The Narrative you don't really need any journalistic insight into events. Just follow the play book. Those pearls aren't going to clutch themselves you know.

DJ - "Those pearls aren't going to clutch themselves you know."

Ha ha - I like that. It's what the BBC does so we don't have to.
