It is possible that the EU has ambitions to become a mobile phone designer because a number of clues have seeped into EU law.
The EU already has laws in place to enforce replaceable batteries and a common charger so presumably there may be more ideas in the pipeline. Bureaucrats don't just sign these things off and move on. One idea could be the EU Artisan Mobile Phone made of wood from sustainable forests.
Another version could include a small keypad winding handle for mechanical charging when green electricity is unavailable.

My "Mobile Phone" already has those things, but probably because it's ONLY a mobile phone, not a fully fledged portable computer...

Dave - have an old Nokia which I no longer use and a smartphone. I'm still not convinced the smartphone is better overall, but smartphones become more difficult to avoid as organisations assume you have one.
DJ - I wouldn't be astounded if it is possible to buy them on Etsy.
Common chargers? A law to enforce uniformity over what hole we can shove our things into? That doesn't sound as if it's been before the Equality and Diversity sub-committee....
Sam - ha ha, and imagine the po-faced committee members if anyone tried to joke about it.
@ Sam Vega: I hope you're aware that the latest USB "C" plugs are Bidirectional and will fit in the charging orifice either way round! That might pacify the E&D sub-committee somewhat....
