Burnham in ‘listening mode’ as he launches month-long tour of UK
- Andy Burnham is embarking on a national tour throughout August to engage with the public on the cost of living crisis and gather input for his 10-year plan.
- The prime minister aims to be in “listening mode” to understand how the government can improve people's lives and address everyday financial pressures.
- Mr Burnham has already introduced measures such as cutting VAT on energy bills, reducing business rates for venues, and capping bus fares at £2.
- He is expected to unveil further cost-of-living measures to provide “breathing space” for families.
- Opposition parties, including the Conservatives and Reform UK, have challenged Burnham on the funding for his pledges and criticised his announcements as “tinkering”.
Again Burnham is busy distancing himself from Keir Starmer who was notorious for not being a 'listener' so Team Burnham decides their man has to become a 'listener'.
Opposition parties call it 'tinkering', which it is, but something has to carry the 'listening' narrative and at the moment tinkering with little effect does that.
There will be lots of 'listening' photo ops too, they are the main point of it.

If he wants to distance himself from Sir Cur he could always implement Starmer's pre-election promise to pass a Bill withdrawing his, Starmer's, privileged pension rules.

No fixing of potholes yet? Too easy to measure perhaps?
I'm told that London has no potholes so maybe the politicians dismiss the problem elsewhere.
dearieme - that's a good idea, legal privilege surely has no place in the modern world.
DAD - he may be careful to arrive by bus for the cameras, probably from somewhere just out of sight.
DJ - capital cities do generally seem to receive more attention than lesser cities, so it could affect political perceptions. We're told that Surry roads are worse than here in Derbyshire, so maybe the effect peters out with distance.
Ten year plan? Ten years?
I'll bet he doesn't listen to the people of Thetford!
