The Political Crown

Britain's King Charles in UAE to urge action on climate at COP28

The king, who arrived in the Gulf state overnight, is due to give an address on Friday at the U.N. climate negotiations that are scheduled to run in Dubai until Dec. 12.

It will be his first major speech on climate change since he became monarch in September 2022. Other world leaders including India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Britain's Prime Minister Rishi Sunak are also expected to attend the talks. U.S. President Joe Biden and China's President Xi Jinping are not.

These, though they have not the least degree of knowledge, profess yet that they have mastered all.

He'll be there with 70,000 other attendees. I found this:

"Expect highs of between 25°C to 28°C in the day, and lows of 16°C to 19°C at night. Dubai’s humidity in December usually sits around the 60% mark, and the likelihood for sunshine is approximately 75%. This makes it perfect for those who want to get outside and explore, with temperatures in the day that even allow for some sunbathing – by European standards!"

Just imagine slaving away under those conditions. I'm surprised that so many people were prepared to put themselves through it, even for such a noble cause.

Sam - yes there is a touch of Animal Farm about the whole business, a recruiting drive aimed at those with porcine aspirations.

A serious mistake imho.

The monarchy is supposed to be above politics; if it's not, why not just have politicians? The King should never be seen to take sides in a controversial matter such as this.

His mother - God bless her - would never have made such an error.

Peter - I agree with you, a serious mistake. Too obviously political and equally obvious that he doesn't get it.

So these 'planet saving' people will travel from their air conditioned office, in an air conditioned car, to another air conditioned office, before being taken, in an air conditioned car, to an air conditioned aeroplane, which will use a shed load of fossil fuel, to be met by an air conditioned car, which will take them to an air conditioned suite, in an air conditioned hotel, to rest, before being taken in another air conditioned car to an air conditioned auditorium, where they can agree with a shed load of people with similar views that we, the common people, are using too much energy. At the end of this hugely important conference, they all do it in reverse. I think I have that correct. Is there any part of the journey pattern I have missed out? Of course, it all makes sense, except that no one has mentioned Leonardo deCaprisun this year. Perhaps he couldn't make it because he was waiting for the birth of his next girlfriend?

Nothing I can think of. The hypocrisy is staggering, but many people don't appear to see it, or don't like to say so. Which is odd because the hypocrisy is so blatant that there ought to be too much outrage for politicians to promote Net Zero, but they do and get away with it.
