The falling costs of batteries and other renewable technologies could also help supercharge the trend towards cleaner energy and meeting climate targets.
“Some calculations even suggest that the world’s entire energy consumption in 2050 could be completely and cost-effectively covered by solar technology and other renewables,” said Felix Creutzig, who led the research.

I assume he calculates that the energy is cheap simply by ignoring all the costs associated with its intermittency.
If so he's a lying scoundrel.
But, if perchance he's not lying, then he advances a perfect argument against solar energy being made compulsory. Because if it really is cheap people will use its voluntarily.
dearieme - I'm sure he ignored all the costs associated with intermittency. The push for solar seems perverse in a country such as ours, so I imagine the main aim is political, to involve people by having panels clearly visible on a neighbour's roof.
Huge subsidies are poured into the renewable industry and then they exclaim how the prices have dropped for the user compared to the free market competition. They are dishonest and the green advocates are either ideological or gullible.
Tammly - it's a new type of farming, subsidy farming. Ironically it isn't sustainable farming.
