Labour reshuffle: Sir Keir Starmer to shake up shadow cabinet

The long-awaited change of Labour's top team coincides with MPs returning to Westminster from their summer break.

There is much speculation over what role Sir Keir may give his deputy leader Angela Rayner...

Angela Rayner was directly elected to be deputy leader by party members, meaning she will keep that position no matter what.

Before he found himself in this lamentable position, the poor fool probably thought that this was a wonderful aspect of the party's constitution, guaranteeing democracy and ensuring a say for the grassroots members.

Sam - there may be times when he wonders if the grassroot members are worth it.

Who are the Grassroots now? Labour used to be the party of closed-shop trade unionists. But the trade unions now seem largely to hang on only in The Public Sector and ex-Public Sector monopolies or quasi-monopolies. So are his Grassroots now schoolteachers, civil servants, and so on? Plus train drivers and suchlike low-lifes.

dearieme - Labour seems to have switched its attention to professional cartels as well as the public sector. It would be interesting to know how they discuss these things in private and the advice they receive from strategists.
