US threatens to reimpose sanctions on Venezuelan oil sector

The US has threatened to reinstate sanctions on Venezuela's oil sector, days after the South American country's top court upheld a ban on opposition candidate MarĂa Corina Machado.

Ms Machado won a primary to become the opposition's unity candidate for the 2024 presidential election.

But on Friday, Venezuela's Supreme Court confirmed a 15-year ban on Ms Machado running for public office.

Of course the US establishment showering Donald Trump with a cascade of vexatious prosecutions is not the same at all.

There's a lot of it about. Imran Khan has just been whacked with some hefty sentences designed to get him out of the political process in Pakistan.

Here, there are distinct signs of it with Boris being hounded and prosecuted over lockdown. Nowhere near as bad yet, but the same taint of corruption and the deployment of legal processes to influence politics.

My head will fall off … all the shaking it’s doing.

Sam - yes, the treatment of Boris was a giveaway and it is bound to become worse. The treatment Andrew Bridgen is another hint that political tolerance has ended.

James - not with despair I hope.

Weird isn't it. The obvious 'Do as we say, not as we do', from Governments, yet people still keep happlity voting for them and thinking they're making a difference

Not to mention what’s happening to the AFD…

Bucko - yes it is weird. Obvious that no mainstream party intends to change direction but people still vote for them.

Peter - that's it, no longer hidden.
