Today we decided to whizz off into Derbyshire for the morning. A cold day but blue sky and sunshine were forecast, so off we went.
Problem one occurred on a scenic country road which was blocked by a police car because of an accident further on.
Problem two occurred on the alternative route which was jammed with heavy traffic due to road works, so much so that we turned round and went to a local coffee shop instead.
Problem three occurred on the road back home which was blocked by a police car due to another accident further on.
With frequent delays and obstructions, crumbling or poorly patched roads and numerous potholes, the pleasures of driving are a thing of the past, at least round here.

We are a jam-packed archipelago - unless you go to the Highlands or, perhaps, the boggy bits of Ireland.
What would make things better is a letter from Ed saying that you need a two ton battery in your sports car, or incur a huge petrol-user's surcharge.
dearieme - parts of Northumbria are quiet too, but the problem with visiting such areas is that everywhere else seems even more crowded.
Sam - the limited range of EVs is beginning to seem like no great disadvantage for clogged up roads. There are others of course, such as price and the prospect of bursting into flames.
Not going to get any better with this lot in charge.
I've had the same experience as you AK, trying to go across country from Weedon, near where I live, to Banbury. This was a route I used to use a lot 6 or 7 years ago when my mother was alive and I was still working. It was quick and picturesque. When we tried it recently, the roads were falling to bits and full of diversions, and closures and road works. The journey which should have taken half an hour took an hour and forty minutes.
We weren't happy.
James - worse I'd say.
Tammly - it's frustrating isn't it? It discourages us from making certain journeys because disruption is so common.
