Ryan Bourne has a timely and very interesting CAPX piece on the Starmer government and what he calls America's new political vibe.
Is Britain ready for America’s new political vibe?
- Keir Starmer and others are being slammed by tech titans like Elon Musk
- The American Right views our Labour Government as representing what they are fighting against
- With Justin Trudeau a dead man walking, Keir Starmer is a bogeyman for the American Right
British politics is suddenly dominating conversation on X for all the wrong reasons. Tech titans like Elon Musk have stumbled onto the grooming-gangs scandal – a series of truly horrifying crimes that were downplayed or ignored by various authorities, in part because of fears about anti-Muslim backlash.
Musk, Bill Ackman and other Americans are lighting up X with their outrage, accusing local British politicians, the police and public authorities of throwing vulnerable girls under the bus to preserve votes or ease racial tensions. They’re slamming Keir Starmer’s record as Director of Public Prosecutions and hammering Jess Phillips, the Under-Secretary of State for Safeguarding and Violence Against Women and Girls, for recently blocking a fresh inquiry into grooming in Oldham.
The whole piece is well worth reading as Starmer and his Cabinet are entirely incapable of responding to a reshaped political mood on this scale. Indications are that they don't even understand it.
Starmer is beginning to look like a textbook political example of the Peter principle or the latest loser in a game international musical chairs.
Yet if SW1 think it’s just the debate over grooming gangs this vibe shift will affect, they are in for a shock. That’s because, in Starmer’s Labour, the UK now has a Government that looks like the main holdout against the changing political tides – a party operating at the tail-end of the Blairite zeitgeist. With Justin Trudeau a dead man walking in Canada, Starmer is fast becoming a bogeyman for the American Right – seen as representing exactly the sort of politics they are fighting against.

"They’re slamming Keir Starmer’s record ..."
They should also be slamming the record of the Conservative quislings who held back from condemning the Pakistani 'heritage' rapists. And of the police officers. And of the social workers. And of the Civil Servants. And of the professional litigators who protected (and continue to protect). And of the do badders who work to subvert our borders and our culture. And ...
Jannie - yes, let's enjoy it.
decnine - I agree, we need the whole crooked, incompetent, cowardly mess brought to the surface.
So maybe Labour are the last hurrah of the old Elite? They seem to be fighting a doomed rear-guard action against changes like Brexit, the Corbyn failure, Trump, Millei, Meloni, the rise and rise of the AfD and now the resignation of Trudeau.
Although several international organisations might limp on the international political cover for Starmer and his gang appears to be evaporating. No wonder he is seeking to cosy up to the EU, although I expect that will be of little use.
DJ - I agree, the pendulum seems to be swinging quite decisively away from the old Elite to something new. Starmer already looks isolated and rumours suggest he now needs a good deal of reassurance from close political colleagues.
"he now needs a good deal of reassurance from close political colleagues"
Nah; he needs his bum skelpt and then forty years in the clink.
Today, Guido reports how the Labour Party's threats to stop sharing security intelligence with America has caused more ructions and a further sense that we are governed by idiots.
If the Starmer government is brought down by America, I would be as grateful as if it were the end of WW2.
dearieme - he might enjoy the first one - allegedly.
Sam - what a crazy 'threat'. Apart from the juvenile nature of it, whatever they say, the intelligence will probably be shared as usual, they just won't be told.
It makes Sunak's short-notice election look like a smart political move, doesn't it? Neatly got him out of the way and left Starmer holding the baby, while not (thanks at least in part to the said short notice) making Sunak the one that sank the Tories and opened the way to a Reform Government. Then he resigned leaving Badenoch with the blame for the Tories' poor performance since.
Barbarus - yes, Sunak's short-notice election looks smarter and smarter as time goes on. Leaves me wondering if he'll give leadership another go.
