No wonder he's the Health Secretary

Put the heating on and layer up during cold snap, Health Secretary advises

This is “definitely a weekend to turn the heating on”, the Health Secretary has said after he was quizzed about pensioners losing access to the winter fuel payment.

Wes Streeting said people should wrap up warm and use their heating as temperatures drop ahead of an expected bitterly cold weekend.

It is increasingly difficult to parody or be sarcastic about Keir Starmer's Cabinet and more generally, the UK nanny state. Yellow and amber triangles on Met Office weather forecasts and too many dramatic SNOW headlines to count, life isn't easy for modern cynics.

Oh well, I'll go and chop some wood after checking to see if the thermostat has remembered to switch the heating on.

I have a feeling of loathing that all the politicians need 'the ordinary people' for is to provide a beige background for all their virtues to be signalled upon.

It would be a cunning wheeze if all us ordinary people snuck away in the night leaving the country to the politicians and their echo chambers. Although you might argue that an increasing number of ordinary people are already 'present but not involved'.

You weren't supposed to notice! The underlying plan was to make cynicism and satire so pointless and boring that we'd give up and leave them in their overpaid peace.

What a shambles! They are clearly in major disarray. Telling us to turn the heating on is clearly the job of the Energy Secretary, and layers of clothing are the responsibility of Trade and Industry.

I am dismayed that the Health Secretary imagines that anyone might not be using heating at midwinter. Is it the Cabinet's Net Zero intention to have us all shivering until they give us the thumbs up to turn the heating on?

DJ - good idea, let's sneak away in the night, although I think you are right, an increasing number of ordinary people are already 'present but not involved'. As if government as presented to us is fading away into something else and the nanny state is a reaction to that.

Jannie - it certainly comes across that way. When we see Starmer complaining about a dead parrot, we'll know for sure.

Sam - good point, Streeting is treading on a number of departmental toes. Ed Miliband should be telling us how easy it is to keep warm.

decnine - I wouldn't rule it out as they will need some way to manage cold, windless, sunless days. Not that we are likely to have a choice.

JH: Clowns like Streeting truly have no feel how it is for so many.

Oh I don't know - you should see the comments on many US blogs and forums...

Dave - I do see non-UK comments, but it's very easy to go over the top and not quite bring out how dire it all is.
