Merrily blowing in the wind

It’s been rather windy in our bit of Derbyshire. Woke up this morning at about 6:20 to the sound of the recycling bin crashing over onto the pavement outside. It’s recycling bin collection day so quite a few bins had blown over, some ending up in the road.

On hearing the crash I merrily hopped out of bed, shoved on some clothes and nipped out to gather up the scattered recycling and reinstate the bin in a slightly more sheltered spot. Shortly afterwards, some glass bottles and jars from a neighbour’s bin rolled merrily down the road, strewing broken glass across our drive entrance.

Mrs H and I merrily nipped out again to clear up the glass as we were on the school run and would shortly need to drive off without the risk of shredded tyres. Job done, I saw lots more overturned bins while out on the school run. With rubbish all over the place and potholes in the road it was all beginning to look a tad third world out there.

Has it changed my mind on the value of recycling. Not at all.

I'm slightly worried that the weight of all those Pedigree bottles didn't weigh down your bin enough!

It is Christmas after all!

Before recycling we had proper galvanised steel dustbins which would never blow over. Ours was filled with a few inches of ashes from the coal fire, which were really heavy, plus food waste, household junk, glass bottles, cans, and garden waste. Sat solid in a howling gale, and no plastic sacks to worry about. And I guess the bin itself could be recycled, unlike all this plastic wheelie-bin nonsense.

I can't remember ever merrily hopping out of bed. Ever

Scrobs - it's the cans, too light to weigh it down. Knowing it was going to be very windy I should have dropped a couple of bricks in there.

Sam - and those galvanised steel dustbins became quite warm in the sunshine, so I could sit on ours for a while before using it to climb onto the outhouse roof.

Bucko - neither can I, it's pure fantasy.

We’ve had some mayhem here too … part of a fence fell down … not ours.

James - we saw a fence which had come down, not ours and obviously rotten.
