Liberated

Mrs H and I took our artificial Christmas tree to the tip yesterday. It was a hefty thing with built-in lights which came in four pieces including the stand.

The thing looked okay when set up, but after hauling it down from the attic we suddenly decided we couldn't be bothered with unwrapping it, working out how to put it together, finally putting it together only to reverse the process in a few weeks.

When we arrived back from the tip we both felt the same - liberated. We won't be replacing it.

Our next-door neighbours appear to have been through a similar process. Outside their house was a big cardboard box, with "Artificial Xmas Tree - perfect condition, free to good home" written across it in felt pen.

It lasted a week, but now has disappeared. I think the bin men finally took it.

Sam - I expect the bin men did take it. The man at the tip asked us to put ours in what looked like a "worth a second look" area.

Got a "Help" call from a friend today - his decades old string of outside lights weren't working, after he'd got them out of storage. After establishing it used standard 240 volt bulbs, I set about testing them in a working socket. Over a third were faulty, and he didn't have enough spares to replace them all, but I just wanted to establish the string actually worked. Next check was the old-style rewireable plug, which had a blown fuse. Also, the flex grip wasn't gripping the sheath (a common misteak), so I completely rewired it. But they still wouldn't light up, and I discovered the outside socket was dead, so I asked where the fusebox / consumer unit was. Tucked away inside a cupboard (and behind lots of boxes) I found a trip turned off. I felt confident this would sort things out. But NO - still nothing! It transpired there was a further panel in the shed, and - you guessed it - another trip "Off". FINALLY, they lit up, well the ones with working bulbs did. The first trip turned out to be for a water heater, so it's now "Off" again...

Dave - blimey, I admire your patience. That string of outside lights sounds like an antique, it's a while since I saw any which weren't LED.

I do hope you've bought a proper one instead.

We had this debate yesterday when going to get a tree, and we agreed that a plastic one would be (a) irretrievably naff and (b) just not the same.

So another pretty little Nordman fir is now waiting for our grand-daughter to come and decorate today after school. Subtle "adjustments" may be made to her work, discreetly, later.

It's all part of the fun.

Peter - ha ha, we know about subtle "adjustments" afterwards. On Tuesday we were tempted by a miniature real tree, but resisted the temptation.
