King Charles III has said humans are carrying out a "vast, frightening experiment" on the planet, taking the natural world "outside balanced norms and limits".
Speaking at the COP28 climate summit in Dubai, the monarch said unless we restore this balance, "our survivability will be imperilled".The King campaigned about protecting the environment many years before it was a highly talked about issue, a personal passion that has lasted decades.

Agreed, it is a vast, frightening political experiment and he is one of the leading perpetrators. There are disadvantages to finally getting rid of the monarchy, but Charles is very persuasive. One huge disadvantage is the idea of President Blair, but Charles is well on the way to overcoming that.

Actually as King he owns a hell of a lot of the Earth. I'm not impressed when anyone comfortably well off lectures the rest of us serfs.
DJ - I'm not impressed either. It beats me how he gets away with it, but he seems to so far.
I would have said that one of the great advantages of a monarchy is that kings are hereditary, and so immune to the lure of fashionable ideology. I was wrong, obviously. This, and his treatment of Lady Hussey, puts me in the odd position of thinking that we have a great institution occupied by a total jerk.
I only know one man who thinks that KFC is a good guy, the rest of us think he's irrelevant, especially where his minions spend millions of our money on useless by-products of a stupid ideal.
Luckily, we ignore him and just about everyone else up there, but we quite like Wills and Kate - and Sophie and her other half...

But this too shall pass. A spirit of forbearance not often found in today's "I know what I want and I want it now" culture.
Sam - I'd forgotten about the Lady Hussey issue but yes, he is a total jerk.
Scrobs - yes he is irrelevant. Didn't have to be but chose the path of a third rate pundit.
Historically Kings didn't actually reign for extended periods of time, usually 10 or 20 years, The Queen was an exception, and one that is unlikely to repeat for many years. In the next 5/10 years Charlie boy will be gone, and it's then up to Will how he reigns. Hopefully he will learn lessons from the way his father is berated and belittled. Nothing lasts forever and eventually Wills too will die, leaving another to interpret what the people want from the crown, which is essentially, open things, wave, shake hands and leave the people to it, you do the Kinging but that doesn't mean you actually do any ruling, because if you do try to rule your head will be handed to you on a plate!

lfb - it could be useful for Will and all of us if he learns from his fathers mistakes, but Charlie could do enough to lose more support which Will may find difficult to regain. We ought to be able to do better, but constitutional reform doesn't seem to be on the agenda.
