But we didn't notice

COVID news live: Boris Johnson holding news conference on booster plan amid 'distinct possibility' Omicron has been spreading for months

Coronavirus latest as mask wearing becomes compulsory again in shops in England; PCR tests for fully vaccinated travellers return; Moderna boss says vaccine effectiveness will likely drop against Omicron variant; Boris Johnson to hold news conference from 4pm.

Doesn't sound too scary if we didn't notice. Reminds me of that bad cough I had but didn't notice.

From Briggs: "An Expert is a credentialed ... person whose views align with those of the rulers and who is put in a position of power."

It's given me an idea for a book or film about vampires.

It goes like this. They live among us, and whoever they bite turns into a vampire as well. Except nobody knows who is a vampire, not even the vampires themselves, and nobody knows who has been bitten because there are no marks and no symptoms of vampirism. In fact, vampires just carry on living their lives the same as everyone else. There are special wise men who can detect them, and who warn us about them and say we have to carry garlic and wear a cross at all times. The most famous is like the Peter Cushing Van Helsing role, but he is in fact called Van Tam. He says we have to lock our doors against the deadly threat that doesn't actually make any difference.

Terrifying, isn't it! Do you think anyone would buy a book or film like that, or would it be too scary?

I think Sam Vega has nailed the absurdity of this scam.

With a British survival rate around 99%, one wonders what the fuss is all about!

Flu (the normal one) is far more dangerous!

Free the Downing Street One! Ok, you might think that Boris has been too easily captured by the Blank State.

The Blank State being my shorthand for the faceless machine of government (Parliament, the Civil Service, the Institutions, QUANGOs, big Charities, the Professions, etc. Basically the Establishment).

But at Downing Street level there is enormous pressure to simplify complex matters and treat us minions as hand maids and male servants, treasured but submissive. Boris and co. have done well to fend off the worst ideas, like compulsory vaccinations and vaccine passports, but the rest of the Blank State see nothing wrong with (unconsciously?) using the pandemic to extend their control of the uppity masses. Some are probably still hurting over Brexit.

Well, tough. I have been vaccinated because I chose to do so, just like the Flu jab. I don't heed anti-vax paranoia and conspiracy theories, but I would support people resisting compulsory vaccinations or passports. That's my line in the sand.

You missed "so far" out of that sentence.

Give them time.

I've taken the flu jab for more than twenty years even though recently I learned that, on average, it is ineffective (see link) - as many had suspected for some time. I had thought the gamble worthwhile because it also seemed to be free of harmful side effects.

I am now, however, double-Pfizered and don't know the resultant state of my immune system. I am therefore less confident about the flu jab being harmless. Should I gamble on taking it this year?

dearieme - Briggs is right, if an expert's view don't align with those of the rulers then he or she is unlikely to get anywhere near the greasy pole.

Sam - far too scary - too many people would crap themselves with fear. But if successful it could lead to lots of similar ideas. The fiendish poisoner who invents an undetectable poison which leaves no traces and has no effect on its victims. Eek!

Andy - I think so too.

Scrobs - it isn't easy to explain without at least considering a wider conspiracy. It wouldn't be a surprise if there are classified considerations too.

DJ - yes, my views are pretty much the same as yours. I may criticise Boris and co. but behind that I do tend to think they may possibly have done well to fend off the worst ideas. As if that's the best they can do in modern times.

Unk - unfortunately the pressure is relentless and the media ruthless.

dearieme - that's a disturbing link but not an unexpected finding. We've had our flu jab this year, but I've never been convinced that it does anything for us. I have been wondering if we should ever have another.
