Mr Kipling maker hints at price rises ahead as it spends big to stock shelves for Christmas


The company reveals it has been investing heavily to make sure supplies of its well-known brands are freely available, with a fall in sales also contributing to a fall in its share price.

DH : It's Mr Kipling's version of Bakewell pudding, which contains neither Bakewell nor pudding but a tooth-curling amount of sweetness!

Sam - it's about time, they never were 'exceedingly good cakes'.

Doonhamer - it's nearly 40% sugar. And some other stuff.

Jannie - it is tooth-curling. I've tried a version Granddaughter enjoys but they are too sweet for me. Pigeons seem to like them though.

Being high in sugar it should appeal to the American palate. Do you know, they even put sugar in their instant mashed potato powder!

Pre-made cakes like Mr Kiplings are only useful if you haven't many to cook for. Too little filling and over-sweetened.

dearieme - we find instant mash can be quite good, especially as the basis for hash or with some Dijon mustard. With added sugar it sounds more like the basis for a quick and cheap dessert.

Bill - much too sweet for us. Far too much sugar.

I'm fond of poached eggs and (instant) mash for breakfast. It avoids lots of the yolk being wasted by getting stuck to the plate. Sainsbury's is better than Smash.

dearieme - we prefer Sainsbury's too. We don't shop there so every now and then we get my wife's cousin to add some to her online Sainsbury's order.
