Equality law is bankrupting Britain
Birmingham is the tip of an iceberg of trash
The Birmingham bin strikes continue, and trade unions are threatening to extend similar strikes across the country. The Government’s response so far amounts to window dressing. Its latest intervention is to deploy the army to logistical roles to support the council manage the situation, but it has stopped short of putting uniformed soldiers on the streets to collect rubbish. That hasn’t been seen since the mid-1970s. Crisis, what crisis?
This will do little to solve the problem. As with so many of Britain’s contemporary troubles, there is a legislative root. That means, thankfully, there is also a legislative solution. In this instance it is a combination of equal pay laws, European Union jurisprudence and our favourite repeat offender, the Equality Act.
The whole piece is well worth reading, if only as a reminder of the most likely outcome - nothing constructive will be done.
Birmingham City Council is a public body, and its bankruptcy is ultimately being administered by the country’s beleaguered taxpayers. The Equality Act is turning into a monster. It doesn’t just undermine meritocracy and equality under the law, it is now taking the taxpayer for a ride. With the public finances as strained as they are, it is time for the Prime Minister and Chancellor to act in the interests of growth and sound money instead of just talking about them.

I don't think there is any chance of them amending employment law to mitigate the malign effects of the Equality Act. I get the impression that they want everyone to have a flat wage, regardless of the job they do. Equality, see?
Cleaners and care workers can pace themselves at work. Bin workers have to keep up with the team, and it's far dirtier and more physically demanding. If it's all deemed to be equal, they could swap roles from time to time; the change would make them more productive.
Growth and sound money? Fred is a bit dense, communists don't do growth and sound money.
I've been invited to the 50th graduate anniversary of my university housemates' reunion. I can participate in a conducted tour of the University just for us and savour the spaces and areas of Birmingham I used to know. Woke higher education and piles of rubbish. No thanks.
The opening paragraph of 'Harrison Bergeron' by Kurt Vonnegut:
"The year was 2081, and everybody was finally equal. They weren't only equal before God and the law, they were equal every which way. Nobody was smarter than anybody else; nobody was better looking than anybody else; nobody was stronger or quicker
than anybody else. All this equality was due to the 211th, 212th, and 213th Amendments to the Constitution, and to the unceasing vigilance of agents of the
United States Handicapper General."
Perhaps Starmer is aiming to be the United Kingdom Handicapper General?
Je suis Harrison Bergeron.

I've been invited to the Gillott Rd house mates' 50th anniversary graduation of Birmingham University where we are to receive a special conducted tour and the opportunity to peruse the spots and locations of our old haunts. Woke and Refuse. No thanks.
Sam - I agree, they seem to be pushing for a Universal Basic Income, either deliberately or as a consequence of their ideology. Failure seems to be built in either way.
Anon - good point, the growth talk seems to mean growing taxes, not the income of working people.
Tammly - it should be okay if you dodge the rats and piles of rubbish.
DJ - "Perhaps Starmer is aiming to be the United Kingdom Handicapper General?"
It's a good name for him, because that's his political outlook in a single title, especially as the Handicapper General must have an extensive staff and policing structure. 2081 comes ever closer.
