Crackdown

Hundreds of barbershops targeted by police in crackdown on money laundering and modern slavery

Hundreds of barbershops have been targeted by police in a three-week crackdown on money laundering and modern slavery.

Officers visited 265 cash-intensive premises across England and Wales, including nail salons and vape shops, with 10 shops shut down and further closures expected, the National Crime Agency (NCA) said.

Not an invisible problem apparently. One of the comments -

I'm gobsmacked. I thought all those barbers, unhygenic food shops, vape shops, car washes and nail bars in my local high street were there because of meeting retail demand. I also thought the 'cash only' signs on the windows was a protest against our increasingly cashless society. Well I never. Anyway I expect they will all close down now, let me look. No, still there.

I'm a little skeptical about all these Turkish barber shops being there just for money laundering
There are many barbers, hairdressers and beauty shops in our town. One of the barbers is Turkish and I've been in it. It was full of man bun, soy boys getting their hair done and having their hot towel shaves
All the hairdressers and beauty places seem to be owned by locals, and they're all frequented by fat Karens with immaculate hair and nails.
You don't tend to see them empty
I'm of the opinion that the further society goes down the crapper, the more people get their hair done

Bucko - the Turkish barber shops round here seem busy enough to be genuine and Erdoğan has made such a mess of the Turkish currency that earning hard currency over here makes sense. I've not seen any with 'Cash Only' signs, so some may be genuine and some not. There are clothes shops round here which don't seem to do any business though.

I think the only place you can buy clothes in our town now is in a charity shop or our small Sainsburys (For women).
We have to travel to the next town over for that stuff

Following from the comments so far, I 've seen some that look genuine, and others that can't possibly be. When you have established businesses going under because they can't pay the escalating rent and local tax, and then a new business opens up with a lot of capital investment and blokes that don't seem to do much...

Bucko - we have some local choice as well as charity shops, but it's limited.

Sam - that's what we see, but clothes shops rather than barber shops.

And to think I was about to take some money out of my account in cash. Seems dangerous now.

James - I did that yesterday, think I got away with it.

Ah. So. Foreign criminals versus woke public servants. Who will win? Interesting.

Tammly - if only we could bet on it and make some money.
