Starmer serves pork pies and patriotism for St George’s Day
As a surging Reform UK threatens Labour’s post-industrial heartlands, Sir Keir Starmer has two secret weapons to show his love for England: the Melton Mowbray pork pie and Ross Kemp.
At a reception to celebrate St George’s Day, Downing Street hosted the former EastEnders actor, public sector workers, comedian Rob Beckett and sporting figures Sarah Storey and Maro Itoje.
Guests at the party on Tuesday evening were treated to pork pies, Lancashire Eccles cakes and Bakewell tarts, as the Prime Minister praised the value of “modern patriotism” and celebrated English culture.

A cheap stunt to sideline the calls for an English Parliament, again.
Normally I would say that a surfeit of pork pies is an oxymoron.
Politicians? They get more juvenile by the minute.
DJ - cheap seems to be Starmer's favoured type of stunt, as if his opinion of voters is too low and he doesn't realise how transparent he is.
Timbotoo - I like them but Mrs H isn't keen so we don't buy them.
Jannie - yes they are juvenile, they make no attempt to be the adults in charge, they don't seem to know how.
The pies would exclude both his Jewish wife and his Muslim, er....benefactor.
There must be a mechanism to rid parliament of liars. On the other hand, who’d still be there?
Wot, no sausages?
Sam - good point, we must assume his 'benefactor' chose not to invite himself.
James - nobody, just a few echoes of the past.
Scrobs - yes a few regional sausages would have been tasty.
