New Royal Ballet boss declares plus-sized dancers are the future after 'body-shaming' scandal

The new boss of The Royal Ballet has declared that plus-sized dancers are the future after a former student alleged that teachers had “body-shamed” pupils.

Iain Mackay, who was installed as the school’s artistic director last year, also said that same-sex dance partnerships should be normalised.

As I'm a very long way from being a ballet fan, I'm not entitled to make even the most oblique reference to strengthening the stage, so I won't.

I've always known I really dislike ballet. Except the two I've been to which were excellent fun.

I once wore a tutu in a play … does that count?

I'm a fan of ballet. Wonderfully designed sets, superb music and pretty girls with their legs wide apart. What's not to like?

I was a Shakespeare fan too and often went to the Stratford on Avon theatre until they went woke with DEI and transgender versions of the plays. I don't go anymore.

It's going to be a real Nutcracker this year.

Dance of the Sugar Plump Fairy?

dearieme - I can imagine listening to the music, but the dancing seems weird to me.

James - it must count as something.

Tammly - to my eye, the pretty girls all seem to have excessive layers of makeup.

Sam - with disconcerting sound effects.

DJ - ha ha, it seem to be going that way though.

Are the Royal Ballet ready for all the compo claims from the male dancers injured trying to do the lifts ?

Too true, AK!

I've done an affirmative post over at Scrobs, as Tammly's piece struck a chord!

John - that's a point, some serious weight training is indicated.

Scrobs - good, I'll pop over shortly.

The fat whap dancers would also need stronger ankles and toes, I reckon. Big Ballet might just put an end to another institution, through woke nonsense

I forget which critic said that ballet was a load of skinny women and gay men prancing about to classical music. Personally, I did enjoy seeing Morecambe and Wise doing that bit of Swan Lake.

Bucko - ha ha I like "Big Ballet."

Penseivat - yes, the parodies are more memorable than the real thing.
