Lurching back to the previous post, this is what Wikipedia says about Bridget Phillipson.
She grew up in a deprived part of Washington, in a council house with no upstairs heating.
What a coincidence! I grew up in a council house with no upstairs heating, but we had an open coal fire downstairs. Oddly enough, this is where the coincidence fizzles out, because we never considered ourselves to be deprived.
Deprived of what? We had no fridge, freezer, phone etc, but we had a roof over our heads and never at any time do I remember feeling deprived. We had a wireless in a wooden case, would Bridget count that as posh?
Of course the real deprivation of modern times is the lack of rational, principled politicians providing hard-nosed government oversight.

As a chunk of Labour propaganda, I'm not sure whether this is an attempt to establish Northern working class credentials as per the Monty Python "4 Yorkshiremen" sketch, or an attempt to prepare us for the bright future ahead. Because it's likely that houses will all be publicly owned, and they will be cold.
Sam - I think it's an attempt to establish Northern working class credentials, but also an excuse for political crudity, for ignoring nuances which Labour voters don't appear to bother with anyway.
She had an upstairs? Looxury!
Did she go as far as "I never had a bedroom of my own"?
If she didn't, she did. Looxury!
May I be ungallant? Reeves may look like a robot but Phillipson is downright ugly.
2009 … all women shortlist … what’s a woman?
Dearieme. I had to search and look. Looks wise she seems to be standard issue Labour ( self identifies as female ) - make-up, nose, lips, dyed hair in fringe with side curtains (do they share wigs?)
Her knees though, have seen a bit of wear. A!l that scrubbing of front step, no doubt.
Cooncil hoose. Hoar frost on inside of window. Lovely patterns. Homework done on floor in front of toasting fire. Cornbeef legs. (I can explain ).
I wonder if she added the coocil hoose to her property portfolio. Bloody Maggie Thatcher!
dearieme - I'm ungallant too, she has an unpleasant look and demeanour, like some kind of Batman villain.
James - in many cases, a mystery.
Doonhamer - yes, standard issue Labour, flinty malice dressed up as caring sharing.
I grew up til the age of eight in houses with no upstairs heating. Then returned from Israel, where no heating was necessary at all, to a house with no upstairs heating in Scotland, in winter. Bloody hell we were cold!
Tammly - I sometimes wonder if we'd now cope with those cold houses we grew up in.
