Jet Ski Ed

Sir Ed Davey jet skis into ‘very excited’ Lib Dem conference

Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey has said people are “absolutely ecstatic” as the party’s autumn conference began in Brighton on Saturday.

At its first conference since the party won 72 MPs in July’s general election, Sir Ed described the mood as “very excited”...

As the conference opened on Saturday lunch time, Sir Ed rode a jet ski in Brighton, before speaking to the press.

Sir Ed became known during the general election campaign for stunts, which included bungee jumping and paddleboarding.

One thing Ed and the Lib Dems have not been afraid to admit by their behaviour is that Disraeli's Great Game is indeed a game, a show not to be taken seriously. A way to hide how futile it all is, at least from those who don't look too closely.

Otherwise it's not easy to make sense of Ed and the Lib Dems, because in spite of their MP numbers, they aren't going to achieve anything worthwhile. They don't attract talent, don't appear to value talent and zooming around on a jet ski doesn't exhibit talent, not even the talent of a natural showman.

I think his game is to extract enough subscriptions from a certain type of middle class malcontent to run a party organisation. That enables him to get elected, claim to be a party leader, and gain a salary and a sense of purpose.

I was actually in Brighton today, but didn't see any sign of him or his entourage. It's a well chosen venue for him, though. Stuffed full of green, gay, pro-Palestinian and mad people.

At least, when he's on the water, nobody can hear what Ed Davey is saying. I'm assuming he didn't try to ride it along the prom?

Sam - I've never been to Brighton but a haven for mad people is my general impression. Maybe it was crammed with Lib Dems but they fit in so well that you couldn't identify them.

decnine - I hope he did try to ride it along the prom. It would reflect his level of technical competence.

True, but they do have a fine football side at the moment.
"Brighton & Hove Actually" as I think of them.

Well you must go PDQ. The Pavilion is a magnificent thing.

dearieme - I'd like to see the Pavilion, but whether we'll ever be near enough to go and visit I don't know.

If it wasn't for the people who received criminal records, prison sentences, or even committed suicide, when he was in charge of the post office, and, 5 times, refused to meet with Alan Bates who had evidence the computer system was at fault, I would consider Davey a lightweight numpty. His stupid PR actions make him a political laughing stock, though upset he didn't fall off his jet ski, something I would have paid good money to see. His latest stint was inviting the media to see him playing beach volleyball. Unfortunately for him, the ball hitting him on the head led to a fall described as "Norman Wisdom like".
While they have him as their leader, the Lib Dems will continue to be a joke party, possibly with "Send In The Clowns" as their entrance theme.

Penseivat - I agree, Davey is worse than a lightweight numpty, the Post Office mess showed him up as both incompetent and entirely uninterested in ordinary people. Yes the Lib Dems will continue to be a joke party as long as he's there. Probably after he's gone too, but he'll do nothing to improve things for them and nothing at all to improve things for us.
