Government 'will not carpet countryside with windfarms and pylons', new clean power chief promises
However, Chris Stark - the new head of Mission Control, the centre responsible for greening UK power by 2030 - pledged an "honest discussion" with the public about the new infrastructure communities will have to get used to in return for cleaner, more secure power.

An "honest discussion" with the public eh? That's new.
Group forms to fight 60km Derbyshire pylon plan
A campaign group has formed to oppose plans to run a 60km (37 mile) corridor of electricity pylons through Derbyshire.
Residents in Amber Valley say the National Grid’s plans will ruin their landscape by running power lines held aloft by 50m high pylons between substations in Chesterfield and Willington in South Derbyshire.
National Grid said existing power lines did not have capacity to cope with the increased power flows from offshore wind turbines.

So, a new question for solicitors to ask of sellers when people are buying houses: "Are there any plans to build pylons or other power infrastructure in the vicinity of the house?"
And if blackouts are frequent by then: "If not, why not?"
"to cope with the increased power flows from offshore wind turbines."
That might be quite easy. There will be no flow at all when there is no wind. And they'll cut it when the wind is too strong. And there's no point when there is no demand.
It would, though, be a real nuisance if they ruined the Amber Valley and had blackouts.
DJ - yes it's bound to happen, I don't know how much difference it will make to house prices. There is a government contingency plan for rolling blackouts, but how likely they are to become part of normal life seems very uncertain.
Sam - a ruined Amber Valley and blackouts would be annoying, especially as Willington used to have a pair of coal-fired power stations.
From the Devil's Dictionary.
. ... CONSULT, v.i. To seek another's disapproval of a course already decided on.The
Electricity transmission cable. They have to be thick enough to carry the total maximum generated by all connected sources. But at night the solar panels produce zilch.
And the wind turbines rarely exceed half their rated output.
So someone is paying for a lot of copper which does nothing.
