Sadly true. My suggestion is that 'life' has gone really complicated very fast.
Previously you accepted that 'your class' was fixed. The Church was blessed with divine authority, you had a job for life, and the purpose of life was to be successful in raising a family. But those certainties have been badly shaken by the avalanche of 'events' and even some deliberate ideology.
So as an ordinary person you put people and events into simple boxes - this simplifies your outlook on life. As a consequence people are resistant to reconsidering how appropriate the contents of those boxes are, or even if the boxes are necessary - but those boxes are contagious.
I wonder if the Hippie years were a reaction against the tyranny of boxes?
DJ - I agree, there is a deep-rooted problem with complexity and widespread failure to tackle it when presented with handy boxes by charlatans. Maybe the best we can hope for is survival of the fittest boxes, the boxes which work.
dearieme - it's surprising how close to Mussolini and Lenin political activists can be without acknowledging it. Plenty of them in the Labour Party.
