Radio Times cover (Christmas 2005 double issue) Source |
Today, Mrs H pointed out that we haven't included the purchase of a Radio Times in our Christmas preparations. Actually we haven't bought one for many years, but the memory of doing so brought back other memories such as Christmas TV programmes we'd consider watching.
Times change. Years ago we'd go through the Christmas edition of the Radio Times marking the films we might watch over the Christmas and New Year period. Now we hardly watch any films and the prospect of missing anything on TV counts for nothing.
I was also reminded of this earlier when I spotted a page from some TV schedule magazine flapping around in the front garden during the recent high winds. So people still buy them, but I bet the grandkids have never seen one.

My wife was discussing this this evening. We haven't bought the RT but she suggests we go through the Telegraph's programme guide in the morning highlighting anything with Fred Astaire.
Mrs DJ and I decided not to buy a Christmas Radio Times too. It was too expensive for the use we made of it (virtually none). Even for 'special' items: the Queen's Speech slid by without viewing, and I expect the King's speech to be equally un-noteworthy.
I rarely watch TV at all nowadays. We now treat the media as something we dip into. It is ubiquitous and generally available on catch-up services. It is no longer a special banquet, just an all-you-can-eat buffet of mediocre fare.
Defund the BBC.
dearieme - Royal Wedding with Fred Astaire is currently on TPTV Encore.

DJ - blimey, I'd forgotten it's now the King's Speech. Yes, defund the BBC, it has become too silly.
It's odd, but I always think the same when I see the 'bumper' edition on sale! We'd pore over the prorammes and ring everything we wanted to watch, like most families!
Then we got fed up with paying for something free in the DT, then we gave up the dead tree stuff altogether!
We get all our news online now, never watch any live TV, and have a nice collection of DVDs to enjoy just whenever we want to!
It would have been different when Morcambe and Wise were on, but even all those are in a box set now! The current dross on the BBC is unwatchable anyway!
Scrobs - it's been much the same with us, no live TV and we get the news online. I see the BBC even has cheery EastEnders scheduled for Christmas day - what a choice.
"Eastenders on Christmas Day". If there is ever a reason for cutting your own throat, that is one. I wonder who is going to get killed, raped, or divorced on Monday? Well, actually, I don't. Couldn't give a monkeys.

Penseivat - when we consider older ideas of Christmas TV fare, Eastenders is a ludicrous choice. Still - I couldn't give a monkeys either.
