The decision comes as latest figures show England reported a record number of new cases on Christmas Day, with 113,628 infections confirmed.
Therefore tedium can be addictive.

I have chosen to track (in a spreadsheet) the number of deaths in the UK within 28 days of a positive result. Now I know that there are many arguments about how accurate this figure is, but it struck me that a 'death' was always going to be important... it was my primary indicator.
Vaccination numbers, number of hospital admissions and number of infections, although necessary to managing health resources, are secondary indicators, in my view.
My cynical gloss is that 'number of infections' is a useful big number statistic if you are writing an excoriating news article, or you want to justify interference with peoples' lives.
There are plenty of minions who will use them to gain unwarranted control of your life - but the best way to disentangle yourself is to get vaccinated, wear a mask when required and not gather in stupid numbers. That's the way to reduce the effects of the pandemic and put the minions back in their box.
Secretary of State thunders: "There are a lot of nasty colds around, but that's not something Her Majesty's Government can do much about."
The scum are missing a trick, surely. A minute's research on Wikipedia and they could be touting "acute viral nasopharyngitis" or "acute coryza" as the latest death threat and locking down civilisation to fight it off. Maybe they've realised that they don't have an injection to knock off what's otherwise known as the common cold.
Tedium is adictive.
Some men like living in an institution where all decisions, all lives necessities are provided for them.
Living at home, having a motherly wife,being in prison, being in one of the armed Services. Being stinking rich with a Jeeves.
And at the opposite end, being in absolute poverty with others providing.
DJ - yes, I look at deaths rather than the other numbers. I assume they can at least count bodies even if cause of death is suspect. From the beginning there seems to have been a strong focus on those big numbers. When deaths were fairly big numbers they were prominent, now not so much.

Jannie - the trouble is, some awkward people would look up "acute viral nasopharyngitis" and even worse, a journalist might look it up. They appear to be struggling to find something scary in case enough people just lose interest.
Doonhamer - you are right, it has its attractions. I notice it now we're retired, particularly since the coronavirus madness was imposed. I find lots to do, but it is easy to see why some might not bother.
