Liberal Democrats hail 'watermelon moment'

North Shropshire by-election live: Liberal Democrats hail 'watershed moment' - as Tory MP tells Boris Johnson: 'One more strike and you're out'

The latest updates and reaction as the Lib Dems pull off another by-election surprise by winning in North Shropshire.

Blimey, the voters of North Shropshire have rejected one lot of politicians and voted for another lot with different rosettes. That's a shock.

A LibDem MP? History wasn't kind to the dodo . . .

Imagine being so angry at life that you voted Lib Dem!

I guess most of the abstainers were self-harming in other ways that didn't involve the ballot box.

Jannie - yet they cling on. I don't know how they dredge up the enthusiasm.

Sam - and it isn't really a protest party - just more of the same except worse. As if people are happy with the way things are but think they ought to wag a finger about the parties.

It is difficult to believe that the electorate having decided the two main parties are rubbish, the Labour vote has been forgotten in all this, would vote for someone who is not only a Lib Dump which is no improvement but also a rabid remainer in a leave constituency, in situations like this either don't vote at all or place your cross with someone sensible like the Raving Looney candidate, what's to lose!

Wiggia - I agree. I'd have voted outside the main parties, spoiled the paper or just stayed at home. Lib Dems though - that's a weird choice.

What should worry us all is who will replace Boris should he be ousted. Not so much who, more what will whoever do? Boris does appear to be reluctant to move towards stricter actions which we see in other countries. Everything happens for a reason, why have revelations about No. 10 parties only now surfaced, just in time to help lose the bye election?

Andy - that's a good point. There are hints that Boris is reluctant to move towards stricter actions in spite of other countries adopting them. Sage seems to be unreliable yet presumably he can't just get rid of it.
