Frantic Dash

Frantic dash for festive food sees HUGE queues outside supermarkets and shops two days before Dec 25 after Boris gave green light on households mixing and studies revealed Omicron IS milder Covid variant than Delta

We visited two Co-op supermarkets today in two different towns and neither was particularly busy. Nothing to do with last minute panic shopping in our case, but there were no queues at all.

Maybe Co-op folk are better organised than everyone else. Yes, that must be it.

If true, it just shows how moronic people can be. I hope it's not true, as work have just given me a Tesco voucher and I plan to pop in when I finish and buy all the bourbon I can afford with it

Asda in Doncaster was very busy at 1330 today: not pandemonium, just a bit busier than a Saturday. There was a noticeable increase in mask wearing, though - not by me!

@The Jannie - I went in Tesco on Monday morning and was the only one in there without a mask. There's usually at least a few. In the little shops in town though, hardly anyone is bothering. Mask wearers are the minority there

Picked up a pick-and-collect this morning as no delivery slots this week. Tesco car park in Crewe was very full, never seen it so busy, and while we packed the car unbothered by the masses the c and c people said the actual shop was bedlam.

Waitrose in Norwich was just busy this morning, no queues at the checkouts, but on return home passing the very large Sainsbury's it was queues to get in the car park, the reason we go to Waitrose before Christmas, nightmare car park which not only do you struggle to get in but then can't get out, designed by an idiot or the council.

Went to Morrisons yesterday. Busier than usual but not overmuch. Forgot to mask up, only realised when I got to checkout, apologised to checkout guy, he shrugged. I only do that out of politeness, their house, their rules. Bus there mostly empty, cab back arrived too quickly for me roll a fag. Cabbie says it's deathly quiet. M&S on Monday was slightly more busy than usual. I've got plenty of food, booze, firewood and books to keep me in hibernation mode until next year. Oh, and wonderful virtual speakeasies like this one, thank you Mr. Haart.

I ventured to our Waitrose this morning, arriving at 8.30, and nabbed the last parking space!

There's a special rictus grin reserved for four by four customers, who stare at lists as long as Tony Blair's dodgy dossier, but the use of one of those little zappers saves ages at the till!

And anyway, I only wanted some 'non-essentials' to make some chilli jam, and it's now festering in the pantry!

And when I go for a 'big shop', a can of Banks' Barley Gold is my reward for braving the said antics of the rictussers...

Did the shopping for veg and bread in the market at Petersfield yesterday. Anxiety about parking beforehand, but more spaces than expected. Shopping in the market was fine. No crowds, quieter on the Wednesday before Christmas than it is on a normal Saturday. Most people wore masks for the actual transaction, but I suspect most were just fending off a snotty reminder.

Bucko - seems to vary from place to place. Just wave your voucher and barge to the front saying "Omicron inspection alert - coming through".

Jannie and Bucko - everyone in our Co-op wears a mask, but maybe that's because they claim to shop at Waitrose.

Woodsy - the puzzle is - why doesn't everyone go for click and collect at this manic time of year?

Wiggia - our local Sainsbury's car park is too small and that's one reason we don't go there.

Andy - that's why we use masks - their house, their rules and the staff just have to go along with whatever the policy is.

Scrobs - only one can? Surely shopping at Christmas is a six can job.

Sam - most shoppers round here seem to wear masks and most are probably fending off snotty reminders too. Or snotty something.

It was fine at Morrisons.

My wife was at Waitrose yesterday. Car park was fine, but she was crafty and went in the lunchtime lull. Shelves a bit bare though. Bog roll crisis, for instance.

James - we used to like Morrisons but since we moved house it's awkward to get there.

dearieme - we used to do our supermarket shopping just after the school run which was always a good time apart from Christmas.

@ AK Haart - I went in with the voucher. It was very busy. I used the self checkouts and couldn't figure out how to work the voucher, so I had to get assistance. Turned out I was just being a biff and swiping it in the wrong hole

As for masks, I was the only one without on Monday morning, but last night was 50/50 for both staff and customers

Bucko - mask wearing seems to be wandering to a point where the majority can't be bothered but many people still keep an eye on what everyone else is doing.
