Not much boom, boom, boom

Sounds like a subdued bonfire night round here, both yesterday evening and this evening. Usually it's boom, boom, boom with lots of crackles, bangs and whizzes, but not so much this year.

I don't know why. Less cash, more subdued times, more organised displays. I don't know, but it definitely seems quieter.

Same here. There has of course been some criticism of fireworks because of atmospheric pollution. I bet Greta won't be watching any. She'll have to make do with the Aurora Borealis.

We had our usual organised display in the Abbey grounds, it's for charidee ekshally. It's well supported, more money than sense some people. When you've heard one you've seen them all. Not much else though, which I did note on Friday night. In past years it started a week early and continued sporadically until the new year. I can't remember the last time some children asked for a penny for the Guy. My sister and I often had the best Guy on the street, here I am still bragging about it sixty years on. Sad.

Guy Fawkes night, being an English tradition has been under the cosh of the PC brigade for years and the H&E lot, yet Halloween which is an imported event gets a bye?

For all that having moved house we have an elevated view over a part of the city, and I was very surprised to see the amount of firework activity over the last two nights, nowhere near as many bangs but the rest was non stop from numerous sites, as one finished another started, at one time in that smallish area there were eight going off at the same time, terrific display, good.

The penny for the Guy started to decline decades ago after a 'live' was stabbed by mistake in one of those carts and died, shame as it was part of the night as was the bonfire which has also declined, which is not surprising given the miniature gardens people have these days.

The Sussex Bonfire societies appear to be thriving. My local village (Lindfield) put on a thirty-minute show of high quality.

Perhaps other parts of the country could adopt the unofficial Sussex motto: WE WUNT BE DRUV.

Sam - they certainly generate a lot of smoke. Always did I suppose, but modern fireworks seem to generate a huge amount.

Andy - in my youth we always made a guy, but we knew what the event was supposed to be about. We've been to organised displays for the past few years and they were very impressive, but not this year.

Wiggia - on the night of the new millennium we were in an elevated position and on the stroke of midnight the firework displays across the valley were very impressive. Far more than we'd expected after all the gloomy predictions of Y2K disasters.

Chromatistes - our local display was cancelled this year, but in the past has been very good. I don't know where they find the money, but they do.
