Blockers

MPs and peers call for Trump to be blocked from addressing Parliament

A number of MPs and peers have called for Donald Trump to be blocked from addressing Parliament when he visits the UK.

The US president has suggested Buckingham Palace is “setting a date for September” for him to stay in Britain.

But some parliamentarians have voiced concerns that it would be “inappropriate” for him to speak in the Palace of Westminster as his predecessors Barack Obama, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton did.

Isn't "Sir" Keir Starmer resolutely opposed to blockers?

No matter, there is little doubt that Donald Trump addressing Parliament would result in an acutely embarrassing level of earnest nonsense, silly theatrical frothing and screechy demonstrations from the usual suspects.

It could so easily cement a deserved perception that the UK is a silly country full of silly people. It isn't quite that bad in spite of Keir Starmer's efforts, but the usual suspects would add to that perception. The optics, as they say, would not be good.

Kate Osborne is the labour MP who opposes Trump. That's really sensible, Kate. He's been invited by the King. And your boss Starmer. We don't want to annoy him any more because we want to do a trade deal with him. And half your party have form for ridiculous criticisms of Trump that they have had to disown. I doubt if you will need to do that, though. Student politicians and demagogues can say what they want, and the professionals just ignore them.

Will Sir Greased Piglet still be PM come Trump's visit?

Sam - yes, events like this remind us of how dire the Labour party can be. Kate Osborne can be ignored, but she and a number of other loons are still likely to have their say in the media and pictured waving their placards.

dearieme - I hope not, but he clings on and nobody seems desperate to replace him.

Two Tier is a fairly awful Prime Minister, and I am sure that there are many in the Labour Party who think they would be a better Prime Minister.

Unfortunately (for the rest of us) Two Tier has managed to hold the Labour Party together long enough for it to be elected by default. But the Leadership and the Premiership are poisoned chalices and other contenders are reluctant to step forward until the poison is removed. But without the various poisons swilling around all that is left is an empty chalice...

DJ - yes it's difficult to imagine any Labour MP being enthusiastic about taking on the role of PM. It is a poisoned chalice and as you say, there is nothing else in there. It's a long run to the election as well, so plenty of time for the next PM to be undermined.

Perhaps it should be explained to the American public that the Labour Party is the British equivalent of the Democrats. Sensible Americans will then understand and discount anything they say.

John - good point, it should be made clear.

I think Trump would have a lot more British supporters this time round.

Tammly - I think so too.
