"I think we underestimate fungal infections at our peril," Dr Neil Stone, leading fungal expert at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases in London, tells me.
Scary stuff, but it raises the crucial question - how will we know if our brains have been turned to mush?

To be brutal I don't really care for this catastrophism. It's not that long ago that we were warned of the impending population bomb, the coming Ice Age, Peak Oil and so on.
Perhaps one day we will encounter the modern equivalent of the Black Death which really was a problem. But 'experts' warning us of future catastrophes are probably just polishing their self-interest.
Nothing to see here, just move on.

Doonhamer - I'm sure I once read a science fiction story about a deadly fungal infection of the lungs via airborne spores. I always thought it sounded plausible.
