New census data reveals an increase in the proportion of people with degrees or similar - but also highlights major disparities in areas across the country.

Allowing all those doctors and engineers to come here by small boat is clearly paying off.
As people already established in their profession want to increase their status they decide that fresh employees must have a dregree. Does not matter what degree, just take easiest and get a First. Then do a bit of proper training.
Teaching, nursing, police, military, all manner of taxpayer funded non jobs follow this path.
Before you just had to be good at your job. Now that does not matter, the aim being to get promoted out of actually having to do the work.
And for that a bit of incompetence can work.
Someone has cocked-up. Do we fire or promote? Safer to promote.

Doonhamer - and the further up the tree they are, the safer it is to promote. Yet things would probably work out better if the proper training were to come first with the academic stuff done part-time.
