We don't need warning

Drivers are warned to expect surge in potholes 'peppering the road' due to 'perfect recipe' of torrential rain falling either side of sub-zero blast

Drivers have been told to expect more potholes after December's cold weather
The RAC warned the freezing temperatures are the 'perfect recipe' for potholes
Water enters cracks in the road and expands when frozen so surfaces crumble

We already have quite a crop of potholes here in Derbyshire and also encountered some remarkably deep ones during our New Year Devon holiday.

It has reached a stage where driving along an unlit road in the dark is not a good idea as the potholes can be difficult to see. As we found when we left Devon early on the homeward journey and managed to crash through a particularly bad one. No damage fortunately.

I haven't cycled for a while due to injury, but cyclists love them dearly. Often the choice is between swerving sharply and risking a collision, or trying to "hop" over it and risking going over the handlebars.

Inner tubes hardly ever get punctured by thorns or nails these days, with kevlar tyres. They burst when you hit pot-holes, though.

That pot holes occur isn't scandalous. That it takes forever to repair them is.

I suggest a new law: councillors who choose to spend money on discretionary items when there are statutory duties unhonoured should be sent to the clink.

Sam - I hope your injury clears up in time for the warmer weather, but some of the potholes we've seen recently look very dangerous for cyclists. A few years ago there was a horrendous accident a few miles away where a woman cyclist hit a big pothole and was thrown so violently from her bike that she was killed. Coming down a steep hill at speed I believe.

dearieme - I'm not sure how they find out about the potholes. We have a website for reporting them which did work when we used it for a big pothole on our street. I'm told they must pass some dimensional threshold before being dealt with, so does that mean someone goes out measuring them?

From time to time a white circle is painted around our potholes. I assume this means that the Council is aware of the existence and size of the abyss. It might even mean that it hopes to get around to repairing out some time this century.

dearieme - I haven't seen any white circles round our potholes, maybe the circle painters are working from home.

I have seen plastic ducks 'swimming' (do ducks swim, or paddle?) in potholes, and even flowers in some. The potholes seem to have been repaired fairly quickly after local publicity.
Perhaps sarcasm is a better weapon than mere complaints?

Penseivat - plastic ducks sound like a good idea so yes, sarcasm can be a better weapon than mere complaints.
