GPs demand

GPs demand to work two hours less a day for more family time

GPs will vote on whether to reduce their working day by two-and-a-half hours because their current working time “discriminates” against families.

Family doctors are currently contracted to work core hours of 8am to 6.30pm.

But the motion, which will be voted on by GP leaders in England later this month, claims core hours are a “relic of history”.

Chatting with a group of friends the other day highlighted some common problems with GPs.
  • It is difficult to get through on the phone.
  • There are problems making timely appointments.
  • It is nearly impossible to see a real live doctor
  • GP computer systems don't talk to the rest of the NHS.
It can be no surprise to anyone that the comments on the piece quoted above also point to a widespread collapse of trust in the GP system. But we knew that.

GPs actually still work? Around my way they're rarer than unicorns - no-one I know's seen one for two years.

Ed - we are in the same position. Confirmed sightings are very rare.

"more family time" means "more private practise time."
Well the bribes to jab the mugs are about to dry up.
And then....... It's cover your arse time.

A few months ago I attended the local health Centre and was seen by a young registrar. She was either trying to tick boxes for qualifying, or hadn't yet learned the ropes, because (for a very minor complaint) I got a full 40 minutes. A sympathetic hearing, blood pressure, reflexes, and stethoscope, a blood sample, then a lengthy summing up of the different things that fit the symptoms, plus what to do if it recurred. It was like stepping back in time. When I came out I was surprised not to find people in flares driving Cortinas.

Doonhamer - it's amazing how paid jab sessions stir up our GP outfit. Back to normal now.

Sam - she is bound to change as the bureaucracy tightens its grip. My bladder issue was resolved by a young doctor making the effort to resolve it. Wouldn't happen now unless I happened to be very lucky. Kidney damage would be a more likely outcome.
