As near the handle as possible

 



In every form of government, it is better to be with the governors than with the governed, and in this case, when the broom is wielded from above and applied so vigorously and with such meticulousness to everybody and everything, it is well to be as near the handle as possible.

That's pretty much what's wrong, isn't it? Politics as a professional vocation which is intended to improve the life chances of those participating. It even leads on to other occupations - writing and after-dinner speaking for Johnson, showbiz for Hancock. It's university for toffs.

Sam - I agree, it's best seen as something they do for themselves, not for anyone else. Read the latest playbook and follow it. Forget the voters - you've arrived now.
