Winter Camping

There is a certain rugged appeal to be found in videos of this type. They certainly set a number of thoughts running, one of which is the way camping has become gentrified over recent decades. Toilets, showers, running water, electric hook ups and even a clubhouse for example. No wolves.

I was going to say "Sod that for a leisure activity", but that might be a useful instruction video for this winter.

Have you read Jack London's short story "To build a fire"? Highly recommended.

I went winter camping in the Cairngorms maaaany years ago. We left our food store outside to keep it as cold as possible and woke the next morning to find a one and a half pound pack of bacon had been savaged. We shrugged, thinking the local wildlife had had an unexpected treat. We were less forgiving when it turned out that the culprit was the campsite cat . . .

Sam - I haven't read any of Jack London's work. Keep meaning to but never seem to get round to it, but I'll make a note of that one. It's probably on Kindle.

Jannie - leaving one and a half pounds of bacon outside was optimistic. I'm surprised a fox didn't pick up the scent and investigate. Maybe the cat scared them off.
