Monarch for all or most of our lives and the embodiment of an unsurpassed sense of duty. Impossible not to admire that, but an era now passes which perhaps had already passed.
It's a strange feeling this evening. Obviously not unexpected, and in fact I had even mentally rehearsed a few times what her death would be like. But still a palpable sense of loss, and a little quiver of anxiety, like the start of an illness. She was probably the weightiest bit of ballast that we had, and they are all going, one by one.
Sam - yes, it is a strange evening. I think Elizabeth II left us with far more to think about than we might have expected only a few hours ago. As a more traditionally powerful and politically influential monarch, what could we have avoided that we failed to avoid?
On reflection I am impressed how much the Queen resisted the temptation to express her opinions. She felt duty bound to deal with many Prime Ministers - she cannot have liked them all. She was required to give royal assent to many bills passed by parliament - she cannot have like them all.
DJ - yes, Charles does have a tough act to follow even though his mother showed him the way. He should have toned down the environmental nonsense which was bound to make him seem gullible to too many people.

I agree with you both - yet again!

Tammly - great minds!
I'd much rather live in the reign of Queen Anne than King Charles for the rest of my life.
Tammly - so would I. She seems to be more of a sceptic and more pragmatic than Charles.
