Chancellor Rachel Reeves promises she will not raise taxes again
The chancellor insists there was no alternative to her policies, but says there will not be another budget like it.
There will be no more tax rises or borrowing for the duration of this government's term, Chancellor Rachel Reeves has said.
The personal credibility game is over for Rachel Reeves. She played the game, bungled it, failed to hide her lax standards of veracity and lost. For Rachel Reeves the political credibility game is over.
She may as well sing us some Christmas carols or recite poetry instead of making more promises.

Reeves said that she would not go after business again....
"I'm not coming back with more borrowing or more taxes. And that is why at this budget, we did wipe the slate clean to put public finances and public services on a firm footing,"
Always listen carefully to the words said and, more importantly, words not said. The statement leaves open a different Chancellor producing a budget of more borrowing and more taxes. Had she said "This government..." then that might have been more reassuring, even if it upset Two Tier Free Gear Kier Starmer Farmer Harmer (TTFGKSFH).
But also there's an anticipation that at any time in the future a 'new hole' in the could be discovered in the economy (not Labour's fault of course) and the tax and borrow machine stoked to run even hotter. "Not my fault guv, a big boy did it and ran away".

DJ - yes it leaves the door open. Although she may be conceited enough to see the Chancellor's role as hers for the duration, it seems unlikely. She could even see herself as a future PM, but that seems even more unlikely.
